Gamification, a way to engage customers to develop a sense of loyalty, plays a huge role in human resource management. Many companies want to implement some sort of gamification within their workplace in order to gain more efficiency, and also leading to a higher engagement of performance through employees.

  • What Is Gamification?

    Gamification is the process of using game mechanics, and game level thinking in a business setting; companies have started to use this towards preparation and growth, and motivation. There are many roles that play a huge upside by using gamification, creating a behavior motivated approach towards competence which in turn create positive goal-oriented behavior from employees.

    Teachers are using the gamification methods to create a more ‘fun’ learning environment, whereas in the marketplace this can create a prospective interaction with customers creating more productivity. This method works because it creates a change when understanding the psychology behind motivation. When applying this method towards HR, this method can create inferences towards talent management in huge ways because it creates a better environment and support level for employees. HR has always faced large amounts of challenges through recruiting talent, more importantly, to retain talent at high levels of understanding. Since technology has created so much change in the way we communicate, it has created a lot of change in people. Tools such as social media have enhanced the workplace in many different ways in terms of communication. In recruitment, communication is one of the most important traits to have, therefore it’s very important to address efficiency in recruiting talent.

    There are many companies out there such as Ford, Google, Disneyland, Microsoft, Cisco, Deloitte, and many more that have used gamification to boost business performance in the companies. Most companies are looking for innovative ways to incorporate methods in which employees feel more motivated to work harder and create a drive towards higher employee engagement. An example of how gamification is used is how Cisco has incorporated this method within their workplace by creating learning networks in order for their employees to learn different subjects, take quizzes, and earn certifications when finished learning the specific subject areas. This method has been proven to help Cisco motivate and create a higher learning environment for their employees.

The objective that large companies are looking to get out of gamification is the impact that it takes through motivational techniques that are similarity entrenched in gaming methods. By using game mechanics, and design in talent management, it can create long-lasting impacts towards learning methods such as career development, safety, health and wellness, and team building.

Another huge upside is that due to having access to computers and mobile phones, there are many benefits of gamification through tools employees use every day, creating a lot of opportunities for extrinsic/intrinsic rewards. There are many different focus points that companies can use to target gamification such as learning and development, improving ROI, teamwork, HR, creativity, and culture.

Gamification has proven to be a success for a lot of these large companies that I have mentioned in this article, which has instilled to be a great anecdote for talent management. There are many ways implementing gamification within the workplace can positively improve recruitment today.
