Retail giant Walmart could soon buy online pharmacy store PillPack. The online pharmacy store has already been in discussion with Walmart for an acquisition by the retail giant under a $1 billion value.
The proposition that could attract Walmart is the fact that PillPack has made it easier for customers to order online. This discussion came in the middle of another acquisition by Walmart: that of Humana, a health insurance giant, which has the potential to be a much larger deal.
However, sources have indicated that the deal between PillPack and Walmart is not yet final, and there is all possibility of the deal to fail. Walmart has also shown a consideration of buying various startups.
However, sources said that the discussion between the two companies on a sale has been going on for months.
A Walmart spokesperson said, “We are often asked to speculate on possible acquisitions, and we simply don’t comment on those types of questions.”
Amazon also advocated the company and at one point in time and even held discussions. The e-commerce company has been working with Berkshire Hathaway and J.P. Morgan to bring out the costs associated with healthcare for its own employees. It is also building a team internally to explore opportunities to disrupt the drug supply chain, which represents a $3 trillion market.
However, PillPack was not available to comment on any of these developments, while Amazon was not immediately reachable.
