Mixed reality technology for business can be advantageous for traditional and legacy systems.

While consumer applications receive most of the press, the 4 pillars of mixed reality technology give businesses opportunities to improve employee knowledge.

Mixed reality technology aims to blend aspects of both AR and VR and sometimes it is called hybrid reality. Mixed reality (MR) refers to the entire spectrum of situations that span the continuum between virtual reality, augmented reality, and other mixed configurations. In MR environments, users seamlessly navigate through both real and virtual environments.

4 Elements of Mixed Reality Technology for Business

Now that we know a little bit more about the difference between the three reality technologies, let’s look at the elements that make up mixed reality technology for business.

There are four main pillars that mixed reality is or will be capable of accomplishing. These four pillars include media, games, information, and communication. When mixed reality is implemented properly, it can offer your business several benefits that could put your company well above the competition and create extremely satisfied customers that actively seek engagement with your brand.

Media

Many people are calling the media evolutions we are in, the sixth age of media. All types of media, including television and websites, have boundaries we must maneuver around to see what’s happening in media. With mixed reality, news and media are no longer bound by the screen or page it’s on in terms of size and scope.

Mixed reality will soon allow users to have total control over the size of the media they wish to view with no scrolling, screen, or print materials because mixed reality will allow users to maneuver with their own hands to see which segment of an article they wish to see next. For an example, try checking out the EyePhone in season 6, episode 3, Attack of the Killer App, of Matt Groening’s cartoon, Futurama.

Games

Games are also going through a major evolution thanks to the mixed reality market. The mixed reality evolution will soon allow players to use their real surroundings to play all sorts of games like the robot shooting game created by Magic Leap. In Magic Leap’s Shoot ‘em-up game concept, mixed reality manipulates the flow of photons within the light field surrounding the player’s eye to make it seem as though the play just entered into a gunfight against robots.

Companies such as Magic Leap combine both real and virtual realities with totems, objects that interact with superimposed environments. Totems are physical world objects that serve as a skeleton for the mixed reality light-field surrounding the object, making it possible to combine the real world with a virtual one.

Information

Information is everything to businesses and information is easier to gather than ever before. Thanks to the internet, is it easy to translate text into different languages, from common languages like French and Spanish, to even made up languages like Klingon and Parseltongue.

The internet has also made the ability to share everything about yourself, even what you’re doing in real-time, much easier to share with everyone. With the amount of information available today, it should be easier to sort and categorize that information, right? Well, with mixed reality, it soon will be. With MR, soon sharing photos and sorting files will be as easy as flicking your wrist.

Communication

Mixed reality will also change the way we communicate with each other. With mixed reality technology, we could one day have a wearable that could tell us instantly what’s going on in our friend’s lives, view messages from our friends and family, and even read and respond to emails, all without having to even turn on our computers or phones. Mixed reality could one day even allow us to have a face to face conference call with a business partner that is halfway around the world.

Mixed reality is changing many aspects of our lives, from games and media to the information we gather and the way we communicate. We have already witnessed the amazing abilities of augmented reality and virtual reality and we will soon begin to see all that mixed reality can offer and how it will change business forever.
