How Secondary and Multi-DNS Patterns Improve Infrastructure Performance

How can you improve the performance, security, and reliability of your DNS infrastructure? By adding a supplemental DNS service to your organization’s existing IT infrastructure. To ensure success at improved infrastructure performance, top rated DNS service providers must have the right global DNS infrastructure and strong expertise in DNS operations. If you add a secondary DNS service, it can deliver consistent user experiences across the network.

There are multiple ways to add a supplementary DNS service to the existing infrastructure. The most common ways to do this are through the following: Traditional Primary-Secondary, Hidden Master-Secondary, and Primary-Primary.  Each of these methods has its own unique advantages. Here are a few of them:

Traditional Primary-Secondary

This is an easy to deploy method, where two vendors are delegated to direct traffic. The existing DNS implementation will be the primary DNS service from a record management point of view. Once the secondary is configured, the primary service automatically updates the secondary using the standard DNS NOTIFY mechanism.

Hidden Master Secondary

In this option, there is added security in which any DNS service which is behind the firewall does not receive any traffic. This process can be replicated with multiple secondary vendors. For records management, the DNS that is behind the corporate firewall will serve as the primary DNS service, and records are updated using already established tools and practices.

Primary-Primary

This methodology supports supplementary service features. In case of DNS failure, the service providers can update the DNS records. Here, every DNS service is updated independently. Records are updated manually using an API or an external application. Both these services respond to queries around DNS. One negative part of this methodology is that it is inherently complex and difficult to manage.

It is critically important to have both speed and reliability in your DNS for the performance of any website to be solid. This is a basic requirement for growing businesses. There are service providers who can help optimize the performance of DNS and enhance user experiences. These service providers help businesses determine the DNS option that best suits their needs, and they can help in planning and service integration.
