A company that boasts high end and next generation technology is back in news, but for a different reason. Tesla, who is developing “the machine that builds machine”, is accused of using to not-so techno-friendly methods for manufacturing its Model 3 sedan. It has been reported that workers at Tesla were assembling the parts by hand, and this will continue for some time. This is because Tesla’s automated production line has hit a roadblock and is not complete yet.
Sources familiar with behind-the-scenes operations have revealed that Tesla is a complete mess as far as its production of the Model 3 is concerned, and it has come to light that Tesla is way behind schedule in its production. An anonymous worker who is working on Model 3’s production line stated that body panels were positioned and assembled by hand instead of a machine, and this has caused complications. Compared to robots, building cars by hand consumes a lot of time and are not as precise. Workers commented that while the robots are in place, calibration will take another month.
While the company had thrown a launch party for Model 3, Musk had anticipated this production challenge before the start. There is tremendous amount of excitement for the Model 3, as it is a low-cost model from Tesla, said to be the car of masses. Tesla has commented that so far it has received a total of 450,000 orders as of August 2017. If they continue at this rate, however, it will take 450 years to fulfill the pre-orders. Musk has a humongous task ahead of him.
