Swedish home furnishings company IKEA is collaborating with audio brand Sonos on a new home music product line. The collaboration is expected to optimize Sonos’s multi-room audio layouts by adding speakers in IKEA’s trendy furniture designs.
The announcement was made during a joint press release by both companies, wherein Business Leader of IKEA Home Smart Björn Block said: “When we asked people what sound they associate with their homes many people mentioned that it is music that makes a home. Together with Sonos, we want to democratize music and sound in the home, and we want to create products designed for how people listen together at home. By teaming up with Sonos, we want to combine Ikea home furnishing knowledge with Sonos’ expertise within great home sound.”
IKEA didn’t give any concrete details about the products they will offer from this initiative, though it was stated that the two companies will “explore how to make it even easier for people to play any song, anywhere in the home, without interrupting the flow of daily life.”
IKEA also stated that 65% of millennials stream music, which makes them feel at home, and up to 25% of people who listen to music together feel more inspired. Also, 14% feel more loved, and that they spend close to three more hours together at home. The products produced at Sonos will be a part of the IKEA Home Smart lineup. This would include furniture with built-in wireless charging mats and smart lighting systems. The smart lighting range is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and soon Google Home. The company also stated that the “exploration of sound” is the third step in its smart home ecosystem.
Both IKEA and Sonos are trying to bring breadth and flexibility through this unexpected union, considering the fact that Sonos is a premium brand which sells exactly nine products and IKEA is a budget home furnishing brand. The companies are expecting an in-store launch by sometime in 2019. More details about the venture should be released soon.
