The technology landscape is undergoing a major transformation with CIOs across organizations throwing away old legacy systems and adopting more scalable and flexible systems. This type of transition is even stronger when it comes to IT infrastructures. Most people today suspect that server racks and heavy hardware will eventually fade away, making room for new solutions to take its place.

According to a recent survey by Gartner, over 80% of CIOs across the world are considering Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS as the next viable option as it enables companies to use operating systems and storage that is web-based to support the foundational cloud infrastructure.

Out of the 80% of CIOs who responded to the survey, 10% already consider IaaS their next default infrastructure. IaaS is a flexible model that works on pay-as-you-go mode and saves costs.

What is IaaS?

According to TechTarget, “Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is a form of cloud computing that provides virtualized computing resources over the internet.”

IaaS is one of three types of cloud computing services. The other two services are Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Why should enterprises go with IaaS for their cloud computing needs?

There are a number of reasons why CIOs are motivated to go with IaaS. Some of those reasons are:

• It allows an organization to shift loads of data from an on-premise system to an on-demand infrastructure space.

• The operational efficiency of IaaS means organizations can do more with less.

• Application development for IaaS is straightforward as it has a lot of support for innovative development methods for cloud applications.

IaaS provides speed and agility to the entire operational landscape by providing on-demand, self-access to servers, storage, and networking resources on the cloud. Developers can quickly access resources on the cloud and scale up or scale down depending on requirements. IaaS also cuts costs with its pay-as-you-use model, unlike legacy systems in which enterprises had to procure hardware they might not use.

To make the switch to IaaS platform, company leaders must consider the reliability and costs before selecting the provider. You must also be willing to ask the important questions that are necessary and specific to your business growth and development.
