On September 12, Apple conducted its annual product launch. This year’s event saw a trio of new devices including the new and amazingly expensive iPhone of the next decade, a new TV box, and a smartwatch.
Here’s everything you need to know about Tuesday’s event.
Apple’s fitness smartwatch software has been updated. The new update includes a heart rate measuring tool that alerts users to increased heart rate that is unrelated to increased activity—a sign of a potential health problem. Apple Watch will now also be able to detect heart arrhythmia. The new software, known as WatchOS 4, includes better fitness tracking and will be available as a free download on September 19.
Apple also announced the Apple Watch Series 3, an updated version of its smartwatch. The device comes with cellular connectivity that can also be used for placing and receiving calls and will work with the same phone number users have on their iPhones. It also has a more powerful processor for faster app performance and works across major phone carrier networks including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
At the much talked about event, the company launched the long anticipated iPhone 8 and its sister, the iPhone 8 Plus. These devices have glass backs and slightly modified designs compared to their predecessors.
The iPhone 8 line comes in silver, space grey, and gold finishes, and sports water- and dust-resistant designs. It has a 4.7-inch screen, while the iPhone 8 Plus comes with a 5.5-inch display.
Both devices are powered by the A11 Bionic chip, which is the most powerful the company has ever included in an iPhone. The screens for both the devices uses organic light-emitting diode (OLED), instead of the liquid-crystal display (LCD), which is a first for Apple.
The big announcement of the event was the iPhone X considered to be the phone of the next decade. “The team has been working on the future of the iPhone – 10 years later, we’re here in this place, on this day to reveal a product that will set the path for technology for the next decade,” said Tim Cook when describing the product.
The iPhone X – pronounced iPhone Ten – is the latest generation of the company’s flagship product which marks the company’s 10-year anniversary. It is packed with features such as a Super Retina Display, 5.8-inch full glass display, dot projector, and the infra-red sensor. It has increased security through the Face ID system. Face ID works with Apple Pay as well – making transaction processing a lot safer.
Tim Cook called the iPhone X “the future of the smartphone.”
Apple also unveiled a new set-top box called the Apple TV 4K, a device that can accommodate ultra-high-definition video resolution. The new box works with high dynamic range (HDR) for improved color accuracy and video quality.
The Apple TV 4K comes with the same A10X Fusion chip available in the company’s iPad Pro tablet, which should make for faster performance and compatibility with higher-end video games.
