During a hardware event at its new Seattle campus today, Amazon announced the Echo Connect.
It’s a $35 speaker / phone box that allows you to place calls through your Echo devices to landline phones. For example, if you want to call your seventy-seven-year-old grandmother who still has a landline, then Echo Connect will allow you to do it. The new device is plugged into a home phone jack and then allows users to make and receive phone calls through their Echo devices. Because the calls are tied to the user’s phone number, receivers will know who is calling them.
The Echo Connect also allows users to call 911 for emergencies.
While they may seem similar, Echo Connect is different from Echo to Echo calling, another innovation that Amazon rolled out earlier this year. The latter is more like a conventional intercom system.
Pre-orders for Echo Connect are open now. It will be released on December 13.
