When Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan decided to give away 99% of their $45 billion fortune, the industry was in awe. However, what is differentiating these two from the rest of the so-called “Billionaire’s Club” is the fact that they are not just cutting checks to charity. Sources have indicated that Mark is hiring engineers who will be working for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). CZI is a non-profit organization that invests in education, healthcare, and other areas.
CZI has scaled up their headcount to 93 in a period of 10 months and this number is bound to grow. According to a recent job posting shared by the organization, they are planning to hire another 27 engineers. The team has ramped up so fast that their current CTO Brian Pinkerton has decided to call it quits. On his farewell, Pinkerton wrote that he was keen to work in a more defined and narrow set of challenges and is looking forward to that.
CZI is currently working on an initiative to build tools for personalized learning and mapping human cells. For this purpose, they acquired an AI company in January 2017. As can be seen from the scale of operations, the existing and newly-hired engineers will have a lot to keep them busy.
