Creating an Agile Workforce

Through extensive research and insight, several reports show there is an increase in interest in freelance positions in the United States workforce. Technology is an important factor within this discovery as there is a positive correlation between the two.

A surprising trend emerges in the transformation of an “agile” workforce. According to a report from Randstad, a globally operating human resources firm headquartered in the Netherlands, “Based on a survey of 1,500 business executives and 3,160 workers, nearly 11 percent of the workforce is made up of these full-time agile workers, and 39 percent of those ‘permanent’ workers (i.e. non-agile) surveyed said they are likely to take a position in the future that falls into that category.”

The firm went on to suggest that if those respondents were to follow through on their claim, freelance workers could make up as much as 50 percent of the workforce by 2019. Furthermore, executive respondents said that 68 percent of their organizations’ workforces would be made up of freelance or contract-based workers by 2025.

It’s crucial for organizations to form a diverse workforce that invests in employee development. According to Deloitte, “70 percent of learning should come from practical training and exposure, 20 percent should come from facilitated training and 10 percent should come from self-directed learning and reading.”

The versatility of skills in the workplace ensures that efficiency is a priority. The presence of diversity within the workplace also promotes a workforce that is made up of different experiences and perspectives that can address more topics on a general spectrum. It enables employees to become more mature and open to new ideas, and the exchange of different ideas allows for the company to grow as a whole and on an individual basis. Together, these two themes promote collaboration in the workplace.

In fact, a good example of this is software supplier Vidyard. Vidyard was able to foster steady collaboration between sales and marketing using digital tools and grew its business by more than 1000 percent within two years.

Agile workforces will become a norm in the years to come, and the transition is something many companies are already implementing in their respective workplaces. There are five basic ways to ensure the creation of an efficient and agile workforce.
