FirstMark Capital is a venture capital firm based out of New York. It focuses on Series A and seed-stage investments.
Recently, the company hired Catherine Ulrich as its new partner. Ulrich is a world-leading product and technology executive. Before joining FirstMark, Ulrich was the chief product officer at Shutterstock, a billion-dollar public company in NYC, with revenues of nearly $500 million and more than 75 million monthly visitors. Prior to Shutterstock, Ulrich spent eight years with Weight Watchers, where she rose through the ranks from a business analyst to the chief product officer.
Managing Director Amish Jani feels that Ulrich is the right fit for the company. In his introduction welcoming Ulrich, he said, “We spent a lot of time getting to know Catherine: interacting in our Monday meetings, talking through investment opportunities, sharing philosophies on team building and more. The conversations felt natural and effortless, and early on we knew this felt like someone we could partner with for a long time to come.”
FirstMark was founded in 2008 and is led by Managing Directors Amish Jani, Richard Heitzmann and Matt Turck. Since its inception it has been funding early-stage technology companies. The company’s focus is on big data, artificial intelligence, health care, enterprise applications, education, financial technology, e-commerce and marketing technology. It has grown to be one of the most notable firms in New York.
“If I’ve spent my career being customer-obsessed, then these guys are entrepreneur-obsessed,” said Ulrich. “They support entrepreneurs from introduction all the way through their journey. They’ve even built software for Monday meetings tracking intros to talent as they move through the firm.”
Ulrich called FirstMark “the company behind the company” and said she loved that aspect of the firm.
